First of all, it’s about getting a well bred dog. Sometimes you can get lucky with a back yard breeder, but most of the time you end up with just one good house pet. If you want a good hunting dog and maybe compete in AKC tests, you need a dog with a long history of the desire to retrieve. The best way to get this type of dog is from dogs that have a history of AKC Field Trials or Hunt Tests.
I have really been blessed with a dog that gave me, not only a lot of titles and ribbons, but one that was the greatest pheasant hunting dog I have ever seen. That was the dog of a lifetime, Dixie. She was 55 lbs of speed, style and love!
Dixie gave me a great foundation of a girl with Field Trial Marking and a Hunt Test desire to start off my breeding lines with a bang. She was my best friend first. Just calm as can be in the house on her bed, just wanting to be petted and loved, but grab the shot gun or whistle & bumper and her priorities changed. “Just shoot it, or throw it”, she thought. I bred her twice, once to Ritz and once to Ritz’s brother, Ranger. From those litters came Windy-AC and Holley. All their pups are carrying on all of Dixie’s greatness.
